Nualgi is a highly concentrated liquid selection of micro-nutrients on a nano silica base that feed diatom algae. Diatom algae are a silica-based, naturally occurring algae that use the nutrients in a pond or lake so that cellulose-based green and blue-green algae cannot thrive. Diatoms are clear and not visible and are consumed by zooplankton, which serve as food for fish. Nualgi works well in combination with beneficial bacteria such as Microbe-Lift PL.
Dosage:
1ml per 1000 gallons diluted in 100ml of water, applied once a week.
- 60ml (Treats 60,000 gal)
- 125ml (Treats 125,000 gal)
- 250ml (Treats 250,000 gal)
- 500ml (Treats 500,000 gal)
- 1L (Treats 2,000,000 gal) (double strength)
Important Note:
Nualgi cannot be used with UV lights, ionizers, or algaecides as they kill the diatom algae.
Benefits of Using Nualgi Ponds
When you supplement your regular maintenance with Nualgi Ponds, you will be able to:
-
WATCH YOUR POND FLOURISH – Nualgi Ponds will significantly improve water quality as well as the health of fish and plants. For many eutrophic ponds, results may be visible by afternoon on the first dose – starting with the bubbling up of oxygen, elimination of odor, and Blue Green Algae crashing and floating to the surface.
-
SEE MORE – By reducing nuisance algae growth, Nualgi Ponds improves water clarity and visibility to reveal more of the pond's environment and its inhabitants.
-
FEED LESS – By restoring missing nutrients, Nualgi Ponds brings balance to the natural marine food chain from the bottom up by promoting the growth of diatoms and zooplankton – free food for your fish and shrimp!
-
SHOW IT OFF – Enjoy peace of mind knowing that your pond is healthy, clear, and odor-free. Friends and guests will be impressed, and we won’t tell them how easy it was to restore the natural beauty of your pond.
What is Nualgi Ponds?
Nualgi is a liquid additive containing 12 essential nutrients on a nano silica base to restore balance, improve water quality, and control nuisance algae in your pond. Nano silica is both a nutrient and a carrier that prevents the nutrients from reacting with each other.
Unlike traditional additives, Nualgi's nano scale (measuring 5-100 nm) nutrients remain suspended for longer durations, disperse easily across the water column, and are therefore "bio-available" to marine organisms.
How Does Nualgi Ponds Work?
Upon application of Nualgi Ponds, the nano silica base carries 12 essential nutrients to diatom algae, which start to multiply, consuming nitrogen and phosphorous (from leftover fish food and fish waste) and robbing nuisance algae of these nutrients. Due to their silica shell, diatoms photosynthesize earlier in the day compared to nuisance algae. Diatoms release O2 & consume CO2, thus increasing dissolved oxygen levels. Higher oxygen levels help aerobic bacteria break down organic matter. Diatoms also serve as a favorite food for zooplankton, which, as they grow, contribute to an exponential zooplankton population increase in the pond. Ultimately, zooplankton, a live food for fish, completes the food chain.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Should I Start Seeing the Effects of Using Nualgi Ponds?
For particularly bad cases of algae, results might be visible within hours, and the pond may appear to worsen before it gets better in extreme cases. Take a deep breath, take a few reference pictures, and if you still don’t notice the effects at least a week later, please contact us.
How Do I Dose Nualgi Ponds in the Spring and Fall?
You can use Nualgi Ponds throughout the fall and spring by following the dosing instructions on the label. Use reduced dose frequency as the water temperature changes. Below is a guide on how often to apply Nualgi Ponds:
-
5°C - 10°C – Dose once a month
-
10°C - 15°C – Dose once every two weeks
-
15°C + – Dose once a week as suggested by instructions
Is Nualgi Ponds Safe for Koi and Other Fish?
Yes, Nualgi is made with all fish in mind. From Koi to Trout, Nualgi Ponds benefits all aspects of your water garden, including amphibians, invertebrates, bivalves, and crustaceans.
What is the Dosing Process and How Long Does it Take?
Physically remove dead leaves, debris, and any algae you can scoop out before starting the Nualgi dose. Extract the appropriate dose and dilute it 10 times in water. Pour the mixture directly into your pond while walking around the periphery. Diatoms are most active immediately after sunrise, so dosing Nualgi in the morning is recommended.
Can Nualgi Ponds Be Used on Other Plant Life Around my Water Garden?
Nualgi Ponds enhances the color and growth of your water garden by improving water quality and providing micro-nutrients.
Is Nualgi Ponds Safe for Use Around Animals, Pets, and Children?
Yes. Nualgi is a natural product with no harmful chemicals like algaecides. It is safe for dogs, amphibians, birds, plants, and all other inhabitants around your Koi pond and water garden. Nualgi is non-toxic and not harmful if ingested. If you or a child ingests the formula and experiences any issues, please consult a primary physician. If it gets in your eyes, rinse and wash with water immediately.
Is Nualgi Ponds Toxic?
No. Nualgi is made with Nano Silica, which is amorphous silica of 100 nanometers or smaller. Crystalline silica of 1 micron (1000 nanometers) or larger may be carcinogenic.
Troubleshooting
I Am Using Nualgi and Beneficial Bacteria, but My Water Continues to Remain Green?
Nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate levels may be high. If not, the bacteria being added is insufficient and must be increased. Please contact us for assistance.
My Pond Had Cleared up with Nualgi, but My Water Has Now Turned Green Again?
You may increase the Nualgi dose by half for two weeks. If conditions improve, return to the recommended dose. Some ponds need more or less than the recommended amount.
I Added Nualgi and Now I Have Foam on My Pond?
Foam is a result of algae dying off. Manually remove it with a fine mesh net to prevent it from falling back into the water column. Be sure to keep the filter clear and properly flowing. Algae cells can quickly build up in the filter.
I Have Pond Plants in My Water Garden. Won't the Diatoms Out Compete Both the Algae and My Plants?
Diatoms will outcompete algae and plants. However, the sequence starts with other single-celled algae being starved out, and only later, the plants will stop growing. The impact on plants depends on the dosage. The recommended Nualgi dose of 1ml per 1000 gallons per week ensures that only the algae are impacted and not the plants. If any impact is seen on the plants, the Nualgi dosage can be reduced.
My Water Turned Brown After Using Nualgi?
There are two possible reasons for water turning brown while using Nualgi. An overdose of the product may create a diatom overbloom, which will discolor the water to a light brown. The other reason could be algae cell die-off, with poor filtration or the filtration system not being cleaned properly. To determine which is the case, take water from at least 12 inches deep into a clear glass. Allow the glass to sit for several hours and check for debris at the bottom. If debris is present, it's a filtration issue; if not, it's a diatom overbloom, in which case you should reduce the Nualgi dose.
The Water Column is Clear, but I Can't Get Rid of String Algae?
String algae can be addressed with a combination of Nualgi and beneficial bacteria. It can take up to 16 weeks for string algae to die off completely.
Can Higher Chlorine/Chloramine Levels in My Source Water (Municipal or Well) Affect Water Clarity? What Should I Do?
Yes, higher chlorine/chloramine levels can impede the nitrification process in the pond, slowing down the effect of Nualgi and beneficial bacteria. If you've been treating the pond with Nualgi and beneficial bacteria but the water isn't clearing up, higher chlorine or chloramine levels may be the cause. In such cases, treat your pond with a suitable dechlorinator (we recommend Novaqua). After heavy rain, it may be wise to dose dechlorinator into the pond as well. Follow the dechlorinator manufacturer's recommended dosage.
